A chilling must read for horror fans! August 25, 2010 G. Duncan (Copperas Cove, TX) Preston and Child. Special Agent Pendergast. What more can I say.
This is a fast action, horrific story that does not slow down for a minute. Definately not for the faint of heart or the squeamish.
This book is just plain bad August 16, 2010 J. B. Rogers Jr. (Arlington, TX) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I'm forced into my first review...
Yes, I read all the way through it. I bought it on the recommendation of a bookstore (Borders) employee. I said to myself "Hmmmm. New York Times Bestseller..How can I go wrong?". Apparently, the collabrative authors have done quite well with their series of....I don't know. I could only finish this book because I am compelled to finish any book that I begin to read.
I am having great difficulty understanding how this could ever be a NY Times bestseller let alone Amazon reviews of over 200 rating this as 5 star.
I would not take the time to write this review for something trivial, but I'm very annoyed that I wasted my time to read a sub-par B movie. All cookie cutter characters and dialogue from old movies of the 1930's or a bit later. This was written in 1995. C'mon.
I was actually angry to read this to the end.
Anyone who enjoyed this stupid and laughable novel is welcome to defend. How could you?

Yes, the plot is ancient, probably first appears in the Dead Sea Scrolls, or in some Pharaoh's Sarcophagus, and who can forget THE THING, with James Arness as THE THING; nevertheless, it is not only still to be found, but is the structure of scores of books every year, many making the best seller lists. Why? It works!
Relic, more than adequately described by Amazon and other reviewers, precedes Linda Fairstein's murderer which also takes place in the New York Museum of Natural History. It appears that its huge size and cavernous underground tunnels, appeals to writers of the bizarre or murderous. Having all those artifacts also helps create a naturally spooky atmosphere.
Preston might have an advantage over most other writers in that he once worked for the Museum. Whatever the contribution of each author, combined, they managed to produce a fine thriller despite the familiarity of the plot. What it took is good writing, interesting characters, and the ability to make the incredible bear some semblance to a possible reality. That they do.
I found it quite entertaining and went right out to get the sequel, Reliquery (anticipated by the epilogue to this book). When you have the time for a rather large, not-to-be-put-down, book, I commend this one. Take note that the latest mass market paper bound edition carries a price tag of $9.99 as publisher raise retail prices on popular re-issues, undoubtedly in the effort to make more profit on fewer sales as the compete with other forms of selling books.
Exciting July 15, 2010 Reader I stumbled on the Author's Douglas Preston & Lincoln Child when I had exhausted the supply of my usual author's, looking for something to read, I found no lagging throughout the stories written by the above authors, which happens in a lot of books. The story takes many turns and the creativity is amazing. I am totally hooked on the 'Pendergast' series. It has made exciting reading for me and I read approximately one book a week. What I can not find in the local book store I order from Amazon as they have never disappointed me.
Exciting, chilling June 21, 2010 Hui Nee Chin (Sunnyvale, CA) Love this book...it introduces the eccentric super agent Pendergast, who of course becomes the star of this story even though he was first introduced as kind of a secondary character. The story is thrilling and full of surprises. Love the action and mystery! A must-read for people who love the mystery/horror/sci-fi genre.
