Product Description After her brother dies in a trauma room, nurse Claire Avery can no longer face the ER. She's determined to make a fresh start--new hospital, new career in nursing education--move forward, no turning back. But her plans fall apart when she's called to offer stress counseling for medical staff after a heartbreaking day care center explosion. Worse, she's forced back to the ER, where she clashes with Logan Caldwell, a doctor who believes touchy-feely counseling is a waste of time. He demands his staff be as tough as he is. Yet he finds himself drawn to this nurse educator . . . who just might teach him the true meaning of healing.

Dr McSnarly will surprise you August 28, 2010 Laura A. Eudy (nc) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I have an Amazon Kindle as I have mentioned in the past. I haven't bought one single book yet, because they have free publications all of the time. Well, I just finished reading Critical Care (Mercy Hospital, Book 1) and it was great. I about couldn't put the kindle down to do other things, like blogging, cleaning my house, and all of the important things :) I love the story, it makes you feel hopeful of things in life. Dr McSnarly will completely surprise you along with Claire and the one eared cat. Even if I wouldn't have received this for free I would consider buying it. I hope that everyone that reads this gets as much enjoyment out of it as I did.
I really tried very hard to like this book August 25, 2010 PuPu 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
because I'm a grey's anatomy fan so I really wanted to like this book but I had a hard to. I stopped half way through the book because the plot gets really unfocused. I thought this was supposed to be about romance but there seems to be very little chemistry between the two main characters, it's as if the guy was attracted to the girl only because she "fits right in his arms" and then he was confused about what to do with the girl because she believes in god. I haven't got to the end yet but I'm pretty sure that it will end with the guy finally find his faith in god and fall in love with girl. I know this is supposed to be some kind of christian novel but the way the author tries to integrate god in to the story just seems rather unnatural and I get annoyed by it. anyway, I think the story has potential to be something good and interesting but author just couldn't get it right.
A Great Read August 19, 2010 Dixie Peach (Georgia) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I got the Kindle version, and I loved the book. The characters and setting were very interesting and informative. I hated to see the story come to an end, and look forward to other books by Candace Calvert. It is a joy to read a good book with Christian values that doesn't have curse words and crude romance details. I highly recommend this to other readers.
Critical Care August 9, 2010 Beverly 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I loved this book Candace Calvert hooked me from the first page and it was a hard book to put down. I love the way Claire Avery handles the fact that she didn't want ot be an ED nurse any longer, but was thrown into the system and she did a good job of handling the issues of an ED. I look forward to more books by Cabndace Calvert
Medical Drama with Heart August 6, 2010 Lynn McMonigal (Jackson, MI, USA) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
At Sierra Mercy Hospital, the patients are not the only ones in need of healing.
Sounds like the lead-in for a television medical drama, doesn't it? I think that is what attracted me to Candace Calvert's novel Critical Care. I am a big fan of medical drama. It started with my parents--I can remember watching Trapper John, M.D. with Mom and Dad when I was a kid. The one must-see show for me now is Grey's Anatomy. The one drawback to that show, is the immoral behavior of the entire hospital staff. If hospitals are really run like the ones on TV.... WOW! I can't even imagine.
Sierra Mercy Hospital is a bit different. Sure, there are still romances among the staff members. In this book, the romance is based on mutual respect and shared experiences, rather than solely on physical attraction.
Calvert uses her extensive medical knowledge and years of health care experience to create believable characters, interacting in a realistic setting.
After a deadly explosion at a daycare center, the emergency room staff at Sierra Mercy find themselves in need of help. Not all of them are willing to admit to that need, though, let alone ask for it. That puts Claire Avery, the nurse educator assigned to provide stress counseling in the ER, and Dr. Logan Caldwell, the head of the emergency department, at odds. She is still dealing with a trauma from her own past, while he operates on the belief that problems need to be left outside the hospital.
I was captivated with this book from the first page. Though it was not on my official "must review" list, I couldn't put it down. Critical Care is the first Candace Calvert novel that I have read, but it will definitely not be the last.
