Product Description
An urgent and provocative call to action from the world’s leading climate scientist—speaking out here for the first time with the full story of what we need to know about humanity’s last chance to get off the path to a catastrophic global meltdown, and why we don’t know the half of it.

In Storms of My Grandchildren, Dr. James Hansen—the nation’s leading scientist on climate issues—speaks out for the first time with the full truth about global warming: The planet is hurtling even more rapidly than previously acknowledged to a climatic point of no return. Although the threat of human-caused climate change is now widely recognized, politicians have failed to connect policy with the science, responding instead with ineffectual remedies dictated by special interests. Hansen shows why President Obama’s solution, cap-and-trade, which Al Gore has signed on to, won’t work; why we must phase out all coal, and why 350 ppm of carbon dioxide is a goal we must achieve if our children and grandchildren are to avoid global meltdown and the storms of the book’s title. This urgent manifesto bucks conventional wisdom (including the Kyoto Protocol) and is sure to stir controversy, but Hansen—whose climate predictions have come to pass again and again, beginning in the 1980s when he first warned Congress about global warming—is the single most credible voice on the subject worldwide.

Hansen paints a devastating but all-too-realistic picture of what will happen in the near future, mere years and decades from now, if we follow the course we’re on. But he is also an optimist, showing that there is still time to do what we need to save the planet. Urgent, strong action is needed, and this book, released to coincide with the Copenhagen Conference in December 2009, will be key in setting the agenda going forward to create a groundswell, a tipping point, to save humanity—and our grandchildren—from a dire fate more imminent than we had supposed.

Dr. James Hansen, perhaps best known for bringing global warming to the world's attention in the 1980s when he first testified before Congress, is an adjunct professor at the Department of Earth and Environmental Sciences at Columbia University and at Columbia's Earth Institute, and director of the NASA Goddard Institute for Space Studies. He has appeared on 60 Minutes, ABC News Tonight, Anderson Cooper, Charlie Rose; has been interviewed in The New York Times and profiled in the New Yorker; and has written for The Boston Globe, The Nation, The New York Review of Books, and Scientific American. This is his first book.

"Hands down the best, most informative, brilliantly written book on general climate science I've ever read"DailyKos.com

“Here Hansen takes off the gloves . . . As the author writes, we’re simply out of time. With urgency and authority, Hansen urges readers to speak out—taking to the streets if necessary—to protect the Earth from calamity for the sake of their children and grandchildren.”Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Rich in invaluable insights into the geopolitics as well as the geophysics of climate change, Hansen’s guaranteed-to-be-controversial manifesto is the most comprehensible, realistic, and courageous call to prevent climate change yet. It belongs in every library.”—Booklist (starred review)

"[Hansen] lays all the cards on the table in this thorough, detailed analysis of the history, science and politics of climate change, a Silent Spring-style warning cry that predicts 'a rough ride' for our grandchildren. Using numerous charts and graphs alongside accessible explanations, Hansen presents copious climate data for a broad audience. After discussing the recent history of global warming science, from the Climate Task Force of 2000 to his up-to-the-minute carbon dioxide limit of 350ppm, Hansen provides recommendations for achieving greenhouse gas reduction, as well as strategies for reducing or eliminating fossil fuel use: 'For the sake of our children and grandchildren, we cannot allow our government to continue to connive with the coal industry in subterfuges that allow dirty-coal use to continue.' The most significant step, he says, would be creating a cost structure that escalates cost as carbon emissions increase. With of-the-moment discussion of topics such as climate vs. weather (addressing in particular the cool U.S. summer of 2009), cap-and-trade vs. fee-and-dividend, and climate change politics as well as activism, this is certain to be as controversial as it is informative. Hansen's message is stirring as well as urgent, and should be required reading for anyone involved in public policy."—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

4 out of 5 stars Well worth reading despite flaws   August 14, 2010
Paula L. Craig (Falls Church, VA United States)
I really enjoyed the book and recommend it. However, it has some serious problems.

First, Hansen states that international cooperation is essential in preventing global warming. I'm sorry, but putting through any sort of international agreement with the necessary teeth is impossible. Trying to obtain an international agreement on global warming is a waste of time. If preventing global warming can't be presented to Americans as benefitting them personally, why would they vote for it? Why would the citizens of any country support economic policies unless they believe those policies would benefit their own country? Relying on people's altruism alone to deal with such an important problem is ridiculous. No, we are going to have to do the hard work of convincing the citizens of each country that limiting the use of fossil fuels will benefit them.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways that limiting fossil fuel use in the United States will benefit American citizens. The amount of money wasted in the U.S. on subsidies for fossil fuel use and the associated industries is simply colossal. These subsidies include: military expenses for wars in the Middle East and the protection of oil tankers; higher building costs due to building codes favoring automobiles over other forms of transportation; costs of highways, streets, and parking lots provided by governments; bailouts of automobile companies; bailouts of banks heavily invested in automobile-dependent suburbs; tax loopholes favoring fossil fuel extractors; and regulations allowing for air and water pollution by fossil fuel companies without requiring that the companies pay the pollution costs. For more on some of these points, see The Geography of Nowhere: The Rise and Decline of America's Man-Made Landscape, and The High Cost of Free Parking.

Hansen supports a carbon tax as opposed to a cap and trade system. This is great and deserves more attention.

Hansen is a fan of carbon sequestration. I have to disagree with him here. The best form of sequestration is to leave the coal in the ground to start with. This not only avoids carbon release, it avoids all sorts of water pollution from coal mining and air pollution from burning the coal. Schemes for storing carbon dioxide underground are in my opinion just a boondoggle from the coal companies, trying to make their dirty product look like it has a clean future.

Hansen's book mentions controlling global warming through release of aerosols, but dismisses it. I would have liked to see much more on this. Some serious proposals are on the table for solving global warming by pumping seawater into the atmosphere and spraying it to create clouds. Such clouds would reflect sunlight away from the earth with remarkable efficiency and would not release any pollution. Why not do it?

5 out of 5 stars Alarming and convincing   August 14, 2010

James Hansen's scientific arguments for the necessity of global weaning off fossil fuels in general and coal in particular are convincing and highly readable for laymen. He shows that those who confuse weather with climate and seize upon a cool summer as evidence that the entire body of evidence of global warming is fabricated are deniers of a holocaust that will inevitably occur if continued use of those fuels pushes our planet past the tipping point. If you decide to order a copy, I suggest that you order two and send one to President Obama, whose decisive leadership, Hansen persuasively argues, is essential to save the planet for our grandchildren.

5 out of 5 stars good overview of both the science and politics of climate change   August 9, 2010

Hansen does a very good job describing both the science and politics of climate change. He methodically refutes the most often used arguments of the deniers and traces the political history in Washington (and unfortunately at NASA during the Bush administration).

The only minor quibble I had was he didn't adequately explain the science behind runaway global warming (like Venus).

I was most impressed that he was arrested for peacefully protesting West Virginia's decision to allow a coal processing facility within 300 feet of a school. He walks the walk. Kudos, sir.

4 out of 5 stars Very independent-without being overly alarmist   August 1, 2010
Peter S. Mizla (Hartford CT)
Dr. Hansen has written a very good book (His first). He is politically independent- and makes no attacks on any political party-but can criticize both Democrats and republicans for their inability to understand what we are facing, and the inability to accomplish anything but remain stuck in the mud- with the powerful special interests controlling the destiny of the planets future.

Hansen does a good job without being too technical- nor does he come across as a Priest of high Alarmism. He speaks in calm even toned prose about what we are likely facing.

I learned much from this book- a basic understanding of physics, astronomy, climatology and Paleo History are helpful.

4 out of 5 stars First half of book wanders, second half is excellent   July 26, 2010
Nick M. Bentley (Winston Salem, NC USA)
3 out of 3 found this review helpful

Mine is not so much a review as it is a note to readers who are mainly interested in understanding the science of climate change. Chapters 8 through the end are where all the important climate information lies. The first half of the book is a sort of random intermingling of personal anecdotes and climate factoids.

But chapters 8 through the end are among the very best things I've read in the lay-literature on climate change.
