| Customer Reviews: awesome series May 28, 2010 CHILL (Brooklyn, NY United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I first read secret wars when i was about 12 or 13, I'm 37 now, and it's still a great read, and above all, it's fun. It's a real heavy book due to it's volume of pages. I took off the dustjacket, because i did not want it to get ruined. It still looks great as an all black book with the silver embossed title on the cover. i collect most of my comics this way now. either trade paperbacks or hardcover. If you like Secret Wars, then you may also like another one of my favorite comic books called Chill: Book One. It can be ordered by going to [...]
Classic 80's marvel smart story by Shooter April 16, 2010 S. Arnold 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
This actually rises above just a toy cross in and Jim Shooter wrote a fairly decent story here. Looks great in omnibus format....really loving these omnibus collections. Want to see more, like Dr Strange Ditko, etc. Please pay special attention to the spines of these omnibus collections as some of them seem hastily and cheaply glued resulting in pages possibly falling out over time. Please construct these properly and lastingly, Marvel.
Beautiful edition makes this story come alive. April 2, 2009 Scott Baboyian (Washington, DC) 19 out of 20 found this review helpful
Quite frankly, this series was always something of a slog to get through. I went crazy and splurged for the Omnibus despite that, and I'm really pleased. With the new color process and oversized reproductions, artwork that was once over-dense now comes alive!
There's just so much going on in this story--so many characters, so much plot, it always felt cramped. The average image of the Hulk, for example, was 2cm high. That didn't exactly let you feel the power of these gigantic super-battles. Combine that with the washed out and ridiculous dot-matrix coloring and that put the kibosh on most of the enjoyment to be had.
With this edition, all that has changed. The oversize format lets the illustrations breathe. The intense, full color scheme brings everything to life.
The story was always overblown and ridiculous, but with these beautiful illustrations given their due, it becomes an innocent pleasure to see: the Enchantress from Thor fight the Lizard from Amazing Spider-Man! Among other wacky delights...
