Professional Android 2 is the real thing August 26, 2010 Juan J. Mendez (Chicago, IL United States) 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
A great book, very impressed with the introduction. i was struggling with other two books including Hello Android. but the authors of this book care for starters to understand concepts first. for example another book i used went directly to use the static class R, and i couldn't figure what it meant. As i struggle looking at complex examples, only helped me to get more familiar with Android 2, but now i am having a clearer understanding. I really recommend this book to others like me who are starting. In my case, this book helps me understand by giving small examples rather than looking to an endless sudoku example from Hello Android. :) You will see it when you read it.
Not your beginners book August 2, 2010 dogdac (Dayton, OH) I am new to mobile programming as well as Java. But, not new to programming in general (Javascript, C++, C#, Delphi, PHP, SQL etc)... This book doesn't cut it. I first had to get a JAVA language book just to understand the code in this book. I'm okay with that due to it's not a language book. However, the samples are WAY to terse and don't even follow examples from previous examples while explaining the SAME THING!
Case in point: Learning DB chapter. He tells us to create a "helper class" for the DB. It is completely flushed out with a simple Tabled called "MainTable" but, then never uses in any 'real world' examples. Like when we get to "Extracting Results from a Cursor", he has very sparse code reading from a Table we never created ("GoldHords")??!
Not a big deal except to read the code, you kinda need the column number to know what he is "reading"!
Good book for beginners in Android App development July 18, 2010 yoshi 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
I am half way through this book and I am really glad I purchased it. I tried to learn from the Android Developers site prior to purchasing this book, but I couldn't learn very efficiently from the website. There are only few sample codes with explanations available, and the contents provided on the website are usually not covered in depth. This book covers wide range of topics in depth, and provides plethora of sample codes so you can practice developing application from scratch.
There are, however, many errors on the text. Some of the sample apps doesn't run like they are supposed to, and often times I have to run the Eclipse's debugger to figure out why the app crashed during the run-time. However, I feel that debugging really helped me to understand the application in depth. Actually I think I learned more from debugging broken codes than from reading the text. I am very sure that the author did not put buggy codes in there to help us practice some application debugging skill, but I am glad I got some debugging practice. As a matter of fact, when you start developing application of your own, you would encounter countless bugs and you would have to fix it on your own. I did get frustrated at some of the typos and that is why the rating is 4 and not 5, but I do think that you can use the errors on the text to your advantages by practicing some debugging.
Overall it is a good book for a beginner in Android App Development.
P.S. In order to understand the materials covered in the book completely and in depth, Java and Object-Oriented Programming knowledge is essential.
Errors abound but book is good overall July 15, 2010 Joel C. Witherspoon (Covina, CA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
I found the book had several errors and omissions but overall it's concise and to the point. I feel the audience is developers with some experience on IDE's and SDKs and with Java (hence the term "Professional"). This book is not for beginning developers looking to pop out the quick app. I was surprised that this was a Wrox book - and not an O'Reilly - as many Wrox books were filled with fluff and little substance. This book was quite the opposite.
Fantastic reading July 15, 2010 A. Radesca 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
